We already have a secure voter ID law. Trump's Save America Act is redundant

A federal law -- Real ID -- passed in May 2005. Full enforcement began May 7 of last year.

Real ID provides that states' licenses and ID cards must include a photo, signature, address, birthdate, gender, document number and other "security features". (source: govfacts.org)

While not a national ID, the Real ID established mnimum standards across the states for the purpose of state-issued IDs so that federal agencies could rely on secure, verified identification. (source: govfacts.org)

Meanwhile, the Save America Act aims to "tighten voter registration and voting requirements for federal elections." (source: Congress.gov)

Presumably, given that Real ID gave states 21 years to be fully implemented, all the states have issued those necessary, verified, valid IDs.

Our elections should be good to go without being tucked into Trump's upstart Save America Act.

1. I had to provide my birth certificate, SS card

Marriage certificate because of name change (all certified) , and other documents to get my Real ID in California. I do not understand why my Real ID wouldn't be sufficient if the SAVE act passes.

10. In all but a handful of states, RealID proves identity, not citizenship.

The SAVE act is about proving citizenship.

There are a few border states in which there is an enhanced RealID that process citizenship, but in the rest of the country (even though citizens had to present the same documentation as they would need to present to prove citizenship) it only proves identity - AND - in at least some states, non-citizens can get a RealID.

In California, specifically, non-citizens can get a real ID. Your RealID has nothing on it to distinguish your ID from the of non-citizens.

Not to mention, a RealID is not required generally. It is only universally required for federal purposes. So the people who would have trouble voting under the SAVE act almost certainly don't have a RealID.

3. My fear is that with the firing of the Commissioners

from the Federal Election Assistance Commission that Trump has something illegal and nefarious he is about to serve up. Perhaps a backdoor way to enforce the provisions of the SAVE act. Like tying assistance to the states to the performance of adhering to the SAVE act.

6. The commission was a resource for states, but had no authority

Trump has already issued numerous EO’s on elections that were ignored by the states, and some have been ruled illegal by the courts.

The states ran elections for over 200 years without the commission. This isn’t their first rodeo.

4. It's already illegal for non citizens to vote. Trump has more felonies than non citizens voting over the last 20 years

7. Are you proposing that a Real ID be required of every voter?

It is now only required for domestic air travel. States still offer standard driver licenses for those who arent planning on flying, for non citizens, and in some states, those who are undocumented.

Many voters currently do not have a Real ID

8. So, everyone with a Real ID already has a copy of their birth certificate and marriage license (if needed) on hand

9. I still don't have a Real ID. I use my passport. In NYS, we don't need to produce any docs when we go to vote.

That is done when one registers. And that is how I want it to remain. I walk in, give them my name, sign the iPad thingy, get my ballot and go vote.

What other states do is up to them.

I’m sure I’ll get a Real ID when my driver’s license expires. Just didn’t feel like spending the money for it, since the license I have now can be used for what I need it for - drive legally.
