Blast from the past: (Kevin McCarthy)

Washington Post report:

In 2016, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy reportedly said, "There's two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump," during a private conversation with other Republican leaders. This statement, revealed by a leaked recording obtained by the Washington Post, suggested a link between Russian President Vladimir Putin and then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The Washington Post reported on a recording of a private conversation where McCarthy made the statement. The conversation took place in June 2016, shortly after news broke of the Russian hack on the Democratic National Committee. According to the Post, McCarthy's comment was made in a seemingly serious tone, despite laughter from others in the room. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who was also present, reportedly responded by saying, "This is an off the record...no leaks,". The Post's report also noted that McCarthy's office initially denied the conversation took place, but later acknowledged it after being confronted with the recording.
