The irony in trump demeaning the women's hockey team - Hockey legend Ellen Hughes is mom of 2 of Team USA men's players

She also served as consultant to the USA women's hockey team.

Gee, I wonder where those boys learned their winning ways????

Weinberg-Hughes, 56, has not one but two sons on that winning team. Her oldest son, Quinn Hughes, a defender for the Minnesota Wild, played alongside brother Jack. And Weinberg-Hughes was also on the coaching staff of the U.S. women’s hockey team as a Player Development Consultant.

SNIP---
Ellen has had a long and storied career in hockey. It all started when Adam started playing the game. “I wanted to do everything my little brother did and since I was a little girl, I wanted to play hockey,” she shared in a 2025 interview. She started playing when she was just 7-years-old.
A report from Channel 5 Action Sports News in Fort Worth featured 12-year-old Ellen playing with only boys on Texas’s Pee Wee team as an aggressive defender. The boys paid her nothing but compliments as her dad, Dr. Warren Weinberg, yelled instructions to the team from the sidelines. The older Weinberg said that he feared that as Ellen got older she would struggle to keep up with the “muscular strength” of the boys, but “she likes it, so we let her play.”

In that same interview, a young Ellen shares her dream of becoming a professional hockey player. “It’s just a goal that I want to reach, it’s something that I’ve wanted,” she said. When asked if she thinks she’s going to make it, she seems incredibly confident that she will.
And Weinberg-Hughes did. She was lucky to play hockey for the University of New Hampshire, which was way ahead of its time for offering women’s sports scholarships. She also played lacrosse and soccer for the school, because apparently, she is triple talented.
In 1992, she played on the U.S. women’s national hockey team, representing the country at the Women’s World Championship and earning a silver medal

OH, and another irony of a girl playing boys' sports. Good thing no one was trying to protect Ellen back then.

Point is - while he’s mocking women. You can argue that a woman helped to deliver the victory by raising 2 talented players who followed in their mom’s footsteps.

When I saw the women's team playing Saturday, I thought they were men.

13. He basically said the only reason he'd invite the gold medal women's team to the SOTU was to avoid impeachment.

The controversy is what Trump said to the men's hockey team when Kash Patel got him on the phone while they were celebrating in the locker room after the game. Trump invited the men's team to the State of the Union address, then he said, "I must tell you, we're gonna have to bring the women's team. You do know that," adding, "I do believe I probably would be impeached. Okay." The team roared in laughter. https://www.cnn.com/2026/02/24/sport/video/usa-mens-hockey-team-controversy-locker-room-trump-call-digvid#:~:text=The%20US%20Olympic%20men's%20hockey%20team%20is,declined%20his%20State%20of%20the%20Union%20invitation.

They were both at the SOTU tonight. They picked their side with Fascists, authoritarians and cretins who would dispel everything that flag you skated for means.

This isn't normal politics. They've chosen their lot. I have no respect for either of them anymore.

12. Yes, Jack Hughes called Trump's demeaning joke "almost nothing" and whined about the backlash.

This is what he said:

They've got busy schedules, too. Everyone is giving us backlash for all the social media stuff today. People are so negative out there and they are just trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of almost nothing. Our relationship with them, over the course of being in the Athletes' Village, I think we are so tight with their group. After we won the gold medal we were in the cafeteria at 3:30am in the morning with them and we go from there, pack our bags and we're on the bus. People are so negative about things. I think everyone in that locker room knows how much we support them, how proud we are of them and we know the same way we feel about them, they feel about us.

Treating women as a punchline is something we expect from Trump, but it is really disappointing to see the men's team laugh at that joke about their fellow athletes. One of the players was later pictured wearing a MAGA hat, which explains a lot:
