If my late father, a Pacific vet (and good Democrat), heard Trump refer to MacArthur as "great"

he would have shot out his TV set.

He had no use for Dugout Doug. He happened to be in New York City on business the night before MacArthur's funeral & worried my mother when he called her & told her he'd run into another group of vets and they were all planning to head over to 5th Avenue the next day & try to dance on MacArthur's casket.

I can recall men of my dad‘s generation talking about what a grandstanding bastard he was and how many hundreds of thousands of lives he cost as a result of picking politically advantageous targets. He was angling to run for president after the war, and he cared more about that than he cared about casualties.
