As well as a number of other ecosystems in the region. Some species, like longleaf pines depend on fires. Their seeds don't germinate without a burn.

We got warnings about dry season and a big chance of fires, followed by near-freezing temps. Glad I’m a couple hours north of the Everglades…

Has it been unusually dry there this winter? Or are developers draining too much of the area? Never thought it'd be subject to wildfires. We were staying in a hotel in the 10,000 Islands, and there was lots of water there at the time. It was sort of a joke, because a few years earlier I had vacationed in the Thousand Islands of Ontario.

And our rain deficit is in double digits. We’ve had a couple of hard freezes and temps in the 30’s for a few nights so it’s dry. The coldest winter in a very long time so far

This year is an el Nino neutral weather cycle.

That means the west to east wind stream are farther north this year.

That is what causing all the massive snow storm up north but is preventing the fronts from moving south bringing rain to Florida. That is what's causing the drought and associated wildfires.

Bad because of the drought but good because it prevented hurricanes last season.

Typical cyclical weather for Florida.
