Ideas for how to get some Melt the Ice resistance hats to U.S. Olympic athletes?

Olympic athletes are limited in expressing their political views at the Olympics by Rule 50.2 of the Olympic Charter: “No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.”

Raising a fist, taking a knee, or wearing a printed message are examples of what's forbidden, and the guidelines issued by the Olympic officials for this clause include wearing an armband as forbidden expression, since armbands are widely recognized as a sign of mourning in many countries.

But how about wearing a home-made knit hat, a simple knit hat worn due to the cold?

Wouldn’t it be great if U.S. medal winners – and those from other countries for that matter – were to wear Melt the Ice resistance hats during their medal ceremony? Not all of the athletes would be open to wearing one of these hats, but I imagine a number of them would.

So far, people from 43 countries have ordered the Melt the Ice knit hat pattern in a show of solidarity.

Wouldn’t it be great during the Closing Ceremony, if athletes from all over the world were to wear Melt the Ice hats? Imagine a stadium full of Melt the Ice resistance hats!

Does anyone know any of this year’s winter athletes, to share this idea with them? Are any readers heading to Italy in time to get some Melt the Ice hats to athletes while the Olympics are still taking place?

I myself don’t knit, but I am sure there would be scads of volunteers happy to knit up some hats for someone to bring to Olympic Village.

Hat pattern description, ordering info (only $5) and its role in Norwegian resistance to Nazi occupation
