A new Quinnipiac poll finds just 37% of voters approve of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president, while 56% disapprove.
On Trumps handling of the economy, just 39% of voters approve, while 56% disapprove.
On Trumps handling of immigration issues, just 38% of voters approve, while 59% disapprove.

(24,377 posts)Pretti shooting and only twenty five percent think it has. I would say that twenty five percent is his immovable base who will never give him up.

(195,515 posts)1,191 self-identified registered voters nationwide were surveyed from January 29th - February 2nd with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points, including the design effect.

(20,192 posts)makes me wonder how and from where they're being selected?
I find it hard to believe that 37% of Americans are completely devoid of any empathy for other human beings whatsoever. I could be wrong, and if I am this country is one of those "shithole" countries Trump's speaks about.

(23,178 posts)No one could've grown up in Mi'ssippi, and doubt this.
Two out of three white voters there are rabid Confederate-obsessives - and they don't see the irony in being so devoted to an elitist Yankee gangster who openly despises them.
And the other one third, mostly keep their mouths shut - lest "something" happen.

(76,102 posts)Another 5 just care about low taxes.
So, 30-35% is the floor.
39% is worse than it looks.
Assuming the floor is 33%, it means that just 6 out of the other 67 approve.
Or, at 37% approval, 4 out of 67.

(12,782 posts)That means he is only holding an additional 10% - 15% or so.
And I would bet that a least half of that 10%-15% identify with MAGA in response to the overwhelming/normalizing social pressure of the belief that "everyone" supports trump that they experience living in deep red places.
The numbers of trump voters abandoning him is creeping up. And every percentage point it creeps up changes the dynamics. It exposes what was always the truth. No matter how red the county, the belief that "everyone is MAGA" was always a lie. People who actually believe in fundamental values and believe in shared aspirations of what a "more perfect union" would actually look like, were always there. (Including the belief that passing laws that impose religious beliefs on those who don't share them is immoral, Un-American, and deeply Un-Christian. Attempts to force and control are thee OPPOSITE of faith.)
The number of people who recognize MAGA is going in a seriously WRONG direction is growing. MAGA opposition is going to continue to be more visible across "red" America. And that sort of change in the social dynamics is powerful
The snowball is begining to roll. It will pick up speed as social pressure cracks.

(12,782 posts)... who have long been, not just impervious to atrocities committed against non-whites -- they root for more.
The "dumb fucks" are vulnerable to "othering" propaganda and social pressure to affiliate with the MAGA majority around them, but are not as utterly devoid of conscience.

(1,273 posts)And that was with at least 25% of the country (and likely higher than 30%) out of work and worries about a violent insurrection by those radicalized by unemployment.
(I don't think Hoover was anywhere as bad as Trump given Trump's various corruption/scandals/general assholery, but most people vote on the economy...and if during the Depression the incumbent still got roughly 40% that means no matter what there is a pretty large base that the losing party will always have)

... younger generations will opt out in even greater numbers and remain vulnerable to extremist right-wing propaganda, so long as there is a class of people to scapegoat and a promise to end the struggle -- however absurd the "solution." When people are in dire straits; when they have no faith in their ability to enact meaningful reform, their racial identity becomes less relevant. They may be well aware that opting out empowers those who hate them, but when the "system" appears hopelessly rigged against them, it it gets tougher and tougher to inspire people to get in/stay in the "game."
And I'm taking serious transformative things like Piketty's Inheritance for All as part other, interrelated, big, progressive reforms including universal health care. More on what we absolutely must fight for here:

The only way to counter rampant cynicism and political apathy among those who are struggling economically is to come out of this crisis committed to crashing through the bounds of what the "old guard" and consultant class has long believed defined the realm of the possible

(9,253 posts)Insider Advantage just released a poll that had Trump at 50% approval (+1% net). They are obviously not even trying to pretend to be a serious pollster at this point. Releasing such a poll at this point is beyond embarrassing. In a sane world, it would totally destroy their business, but there are clearly a lot of right wingers who are begging for polls to validate their own beliefs and they couldn't care less how pathetically wrong such polls are.

Too many of today's GOP has been suitably brain-washed to support what ever their corporate media tells them to support.
But hopefully the election will be a blowout.
