I count no sacrifice too great for seeing God face to face. The whole of my activity, whether it be called social, political, humanitarian, or ethical, is directed to that end. And as I know that God is found more often in the lowliest of his creatures than in the high and mighty, I am struggling to reach the status of these. I cannot do so without their service. Hence my passion for the service of the suppressed classes. And as I cannot render this service without entering politics, I find myself in them. Mohandas K. Gandhi
The way to bring a society to higher ground is to help those just underneath you. It is not to worship the status of the opulently wealthy, hoping somehow you might reach their status. All of the enlightened teachers from various times and places taught this truth.
When the republicans moved to cut food benefits from those in the margins, citizens stocked food banks and gathered supplies for those in need. That was a powerful step in the correct direction. Concentrate your efforts in that manner.
When we do this, we create the powerful force needed to crush the maga in 2026.

I've been reading a lot of Gandhi recently. This helps me to stay as close to sane as possible.

I just returned from 5+ hours playing with my grandson. At three, he is able to tire me out in a much shorter period than that, but there were other adults taking turns. Nothing like it.

(78,519 posts)things is that the seeds of self-destruction in the felon and his cult have sprouted and taken root. It's a giggle that the very thing that he and his ilk campaigned on has come back to haunt him.

(13,097 posts)Its easy to forget whats truly important when weve been flooded for so long, at every turn, with Republican deceptions, and depravity
Really appreciate your timely reminder and encouragement.
I remember that Bannon advocated overwhelming Democrats once the felon was back in office. They have done their best to do their worst. But the tide is changing.

(22,917 posts)I always said "to go to the more desirable of the 2 promised lands" lot of people thought that was a stupid
goal, didn't think so then and still don't today.
About 15 years ago I was in the bright light headed upstairs when I yelled NO, Doctor at the emergency
room said I should be dead and wanted to know all about my experience.

(78,519 posts)I got to spend several hours playing with my grandson. And around 1 a.m., my granddaughter in Europe should be waking her parents, and we will face-time. Can't beat that!

(4,017 posts)The Mohandas K. Ghandi quote is a powerful reminder that it's a universal truth.
My husband and I got to attend our local United Methodist Church's Christmas Eve Service. Almost two years ago our denomination split, with the conservatives going their own way. We looked up and saw that finally, FINALLY, we had the church that was full of people who believed as we do that all people are individuals of sacred worth who should have the right to marry who they love and to be received in the ordained ministry if they are called by God to do that. We didn't have to fight, the conservatives just up and left.
Tonight's worship service was phenomenal and reflected what we really believe, that in Jesus the lowly and marginalized are lifted up and the proud and haughty cast down, with the undocumented immigrant and the LGBTQ+ honored and lifted up as part of that story. Very moving. Plus great music, holy communion, and candlelight. A full heart.
My pastor has been preaching the courage we have as Christians to seek justice and resist evil since before the Inauguration, and that encouragement has held us steady. We have signs up that our church is private property and that ICE and law enforcement must obtain a judicial warrant before they are permitted to enter.
When we joined this church 35 years ago, we were met with a lot of love, but we could see it was divided and so unable to take a stand on biblical justice issues. But no longer. So refreshing to be able to be who we are meant to be.

(78,519 posts)When my children were young, I brought them to various churches and services. I trusted them to be able to make good decisions in whatever path they took. My daughters did belong to a local church that I had an interest in, as when he was a teen, future Senator/ federal prosecutor Daniel Dickinson drew the foundation stones wit an ox. I would eventually get it on the state and federal register, against some opposition. Reading the history of the church, it turned out there was a split every twenty years.
Some there wanted me to write grants for them, something I had done in other contexts over the decades. But then I learned how much they had in savings. Gracious! They'd tell me they were saving it for a "rainy day." This was perfect, because I knew the story about a similar situation, before this church was built, and they held services in a school room. At one meeting, 130 or so years before, they were arguing about investing in a new roof. A thunderstorm came up, and the roof caved in.
Because my daughters were members, sometimes I'd go with them. It was ruined for them one Sunday when two adult men got into a shouting match. That was it for my girls. Before I left, I approached the two gentlemen with something Rubin Carter asked me long ago: What do you have when a wise man argues with a fool? Two fools. It didn't make them calm down, but at least they turned their anger upon me!

(78,519 posts)I was talking to another DUer who is not as hopeful as I am. I explained to her that so far as this administration, things are unfolding faster than they can control. This will gain force in 2026. Assisting those in need can -- perhaps must -- be understood as one form of campaigning for the mid-terms. Though there are some hard times coming up, we will reinstate a sane society.
