The Andrew Cuomo Campaign Is All in on MAGA Influencers

With the NYC mayoral race coming to a close, Andrew Cuomo is courting right-wing creators.

With only 13 days left before the New York City mayoral election, former governor Andrew Cuomo is partnering with some of the same influencers who helped President Donald Trump win the White House last year.

Over the past week, right-wing creators like Logan Paul, the former vlogger turned podcaster and WWE wrestler, and Emily Austin, an influencer and sports commentator, have published content featuring Cuomo as a guest on their shows. The appearances have marked a new investment by Cuomo’s team into cultivating attention online as a means of competing against the social media–savvy Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. But instead of trying to cleave off Mamdani’s online support, Cuomo appears to be trying to siphon off support from GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa.

“It’s a desperate swing,” says one Democratic strategist who spoke to WIRED under the condition of anonymity to speak candidly without involving the firm where they work. “The clear desire to align himself with power at all costs, wherever that power might be, is one of the reasons he’s getting rejected so hard online. It’s a misunderstanding of the moment.”

The Cuomo campaign’s decision to attach itself to the online right comes after new polling has shown that if GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa were to drop out, the race between Cuomo and Mamdani would be tighter. Cuomo, a registered Democrat, is running in the Independent lane after failing to beat Mamdani in the Democratic primary.

Cuomo suggests Mamdani would cheer a future terror attack

NEW YORK — Andrew Cuomo suggested Thursday that his main rival in the race for New York City mayor would cheer if the 9/11 attacks happened again — a serious escalation in the war of words between the former governor and front-runner Zohran Mamdani.

Cuomo was speaking on a conservative-leaning radio show when he made the argument that Mamdani lacked the experience to lead the city if another terrorist attack happened.

“Can you imagine Mamdani in the seat?” Cuomo asked. “Yeah, I could,” replied WABC radio host Sid Rosenberg, who called the Democratic nominee a terrorist earlier in the program. “He’d be cheering.” “That’s another problem,” Cuomo said.

The former governor’s comments come as he trails Mamdani by double digits less than two weeks out from Election Day, with early voting set to kick off Saturday. In the hopes of hurriedly stitching together a viable coalition, Cuomo has ramped up efforts to pitch himself to Republicans as a more viable alternative than the GOP nominee, Curtis Sliwa — in part by appearing on programs like Rosenberg’s.

7. I was highly disappointed that Bill Clinton and Jim Clyburn endorsed him. Gregory Meeks also endorsed him.

This was early on. I don't know if they've changed their minds, but they supported him early on. Very disappointing.
I was more disappointed in Clyburn - He was trying to influence the black vote when Mamdani didn't have the support of older black voters yet.

Cuomo took to X Friday night to remind people of his famous New York family.

“In case you forgot, I’m Andrew Cuomo, son of Mario, grandson of Andrea. Welcome to the heavyweight bout, @ZohranKMamdani. This is a two man race. You look tired already. It’s just the second round,” he wrote.

Cuomo is a gross little man. Born of privilege, he chooses how he wants to be.
