1. Interesting talk, but Brooks tends to overgeneralize

Brooks seems to include in the class of ‘elite’ all persons who have attended educational institutions beyond high school. I would not put most folks that I know who have degrees in engineering and science into that category. And I don’t think that their work in trying to make life better for all through progress in technology and science is what is causing the problems in our society that have led to Trump and MAGA. Certainly, as Brooks points out, a segment of our society has suffered over the last several decades. But that is more a result of big business moving their jobs out of the country and the wealthy finding ways to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest. Brooks, as a privileged member of the chattering class, may want to carry himself some guilt for being in that elite position. But most of that doesn’t have the right to extend that guilt over others who are trying to improve life by advancing technology and science.

All so they can get more money. And all our costs go up because these spineless leeches just want more and more.

They represent the educated elite.

They are not pro-conservative, they are anti-left. They don't have a positive conservative vision for society, they just want to destroy the institutions that the left now dominates. And this means, in the first place, that they are astoundingly incompetent.

If what is right & wrong depends on what each individual feels then we are outside the bounds of civilization (Walter Lippmann, 1955).

I disagree with his inferred meaning of "elite." When he says 'we elites..,' he is actually saying, 'we arrogant and nasty right wing no nothings who style ourselves elites,' have royally fucked things up with the help of an army of MAGA zombies. What a joke he is. A middling intellect with the right degree who has made a career peddling pedestrian observations and name dropping. His platforming makes a mockery of the idea of meritocracy that he constantly flogs. Ivy League... OOH - LA - LA!
