Bastille Day!

Celebrating the July 14, 1789 storming of the Bastille, which led to a democratic form of government for the people.

If French peasants can overthrow a rotten system, so can we!

Ooh, there's no bread, let them eat cake
There's no end to what they'll take
Flaunt the fruits of noble birth
Wash the salt into the earth
But they're marching to Bastille Day
The guillotine will claim her bloody prize
Free the dungeons of the innocent
The king will kneel and let his kingdom rise
Ooh, bloodstained velvet, dirty lace
Naked fear on every face
See them bow their heads to die
As we would bow when they rode by
And we're marching to Bastille Day
The guillotine will claim her bloody prize
Sing, oh choirs of cacophony
The king has kneeled to let his kingdom rise
Lessons taught but never learned
All around us anger burns
Guide the future by the past
Long ago, the mould was cast
For they marched up to Bastille Day
The guillotine claimed her bloody prize
Hear the echoes of the centuries
Power isn't all that money buys
Oh!

I've been listening to it for many months now.

The singer is fantastic and I love the subtitles so I can sing along (loudly).

these wonderful videos. Soft spot for the Casablanca scene and Mireille Mathieu.

Now I feel that Quatorze Juillet is being properly observed. Lot of food for thought as well...

Reduced from billionaires to millionaires, current zealots on (formerly) s.c. removed and our laws restructured so this current kind of power grab can't happen again.

The solution to curtailing monsters is not to act like monsters ourselves.

Human nature being what it is, greed and tribalism won't be eliminated any time soon. We need to decouple money from power with a more engaged and better informed citizenry to exercize the power of our votes within the structure of the United States Constitution.

Bastille square. When I booked the weekend trip from London, had no idea it was Bastille days. It was so much fun, including when half of the military parade got lost and came by our hotel.

(doesn't support the special "e". )

When I lived in Brooklyn they had a Bastille Day festival. Vendors. Lots of Petanque games set ups!

One of the last businesses at the end of the festival was a Pasterrie. Run by a transplanted French-American!
Where I first had macarons! YUM!

I also twice went to the French Institute (Language) on the East side around ?60th St. 3 Aves long. Macaroons, crepes, objrcts to buy, etc. Great fun!
