Trump seemed him out because the parade was such a dud and Trump was bored and embarrassed by the wasteful non-spectacle. This "press conference" is Hegseth's attempt to stay in Trump's good graces, as if that's really possible.

Whether or not Hegseth retains his job will be seen in the next week to ten days. I think it will be determined by how Trump feels Hegseth supported Trump's lies.
