General Mills forecasts weak annual profit as economic uncertainty weighsJune 25 (Reuters) - General Mills (GIS.N), opens new tab forecast annual profit below expectations on Wednesday, as weak demand for its refrigerated baked goods and snacks in the U.S. in a tariff-driven, uncertain macroeconomic background weighed on the Pillsbury-owner.
Economic uncertainty arising from President Donald Trump's shifting tariff policies has weighed on consumer spending in the U.S., challenging General Mills' efforts to drum up sales.

"We expect the operating environment will remain volatile, with consumers pressured by widespread uncertainty from tariffs, global conflicts, and changing regulations," CEO Jeff Harmening said.
"Amid this uncertainty, we expect consumers to remain cautious and continue seeking value."

(51,065 posts)The supermarkets are 2/3 filled with carbs. HFCS is only part of the problem. Then there are sugary items, salty fried items, preservatives, some of which were banned in Europe almost 20 years ago. Not to mention growth hormones.
The latest research reveals nutritional advice was wrong all along. Heart disease was not dairy fat, not strictly trans fats. It included calcium supplements, seed oils. At least that's the buzz on YouTube nutrition largely in the Keto lane.
If retailers stop selling a lot of junk food, how will they pay their rent, utilities, mortgages? They make their money in the chips aisle and the donut showcases.

(927 posts)And I buy bags of huge potatoes at Costco that are like 10 for 4 bucks, and canola oil there is really cheap too.
As you may surmise, I slice and make my own potato chips. 2 of these big potatoes easily make the equivalent of a 'Party Bag' of kettle chips, the ones that now cost like $7.50. And bonus: literally zero of the chips I make end up broken.
I do similar with their large turkey breast and master carve hams, slice them, wrap in foil packets with 3-4 sandwiches worth in each, and freeze them. It's 1/3-1/2 the cost of buying sliced meats at the deli counter. The turkey is wonderfully unprocessed too, has like 4 ingredients.
This bowl is actually 10" across the top, so this a lot of large, delicious russet chips

(927 posts)And then deep-fry 'em of course
I drop them into 350F oil which then quickly cools to like 290F, I crank up the heat until oil gets back up to around 300F and try to maintain that temp until they look done and they're no longing bubbly to any real degree in the oil. Also, I cook them in small batches, stirring and flipping them often. That bowlful was 6 batches iirc.
There's a pretty narrow window of doneness though in terms of timing. The difference between 'still a little chewy' and 'taking on a burnt flavor' is a window of like 30-45 seconds even when you're cooking relatively low at 300F. Fortunately, I find they're still pretty tasty even a little burnt.
