Why table impeachment?

Last edited Wed Jun 25, 2025, 09:27 AM - Edit history (1)

I'm looking for answers as to why 128 democrats voted with republicans to table the articles of impeachment. I've googled some dems but I cannot find any answers. I found Raskin posted this on his website.

https://raskin.house.gov/press-releases?id=FE039C00-7C8A-49E7-AFDA-E1FC9500E509

Impeachment in our constitutional system requires sustained public organizing and education, comprehensive and exacting scrutiny of the relevant facts and law, and overwhelming political unity and strategic focus by the forces of democracy and the rule of law in Congress.

“Together with my fellow Democrats, I am determined to defend every day the Constitution and Bill of Rights—and all the programmatic achievements of democracy like Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security—until we end Trump’s reign of lawlessness and injustice. I will not pretend this can happen overnight with Trump and his MAGA allies in charge of the White House, the Senate and the House, but I will continue to work with all of my colleagues across the land, at the federal, state and local levels, to use any and every constitutional means at our disposal to restore constitutional government and defend democratic freedom in America. We are all in this together—the fight of our lives—and we will work together for safe passage through this onslaught against the Constitution and the rule of law.”

Any ideas or info on what this strategy is?

** Thanks! everyone for your responses! It has helped. I just keep thinking that it would have made at least a statement to vote Yes. This way it just looks like either it's not worth it or we are defeated.
Thanks again!

1. The outcome is clear until the GOP, including 20+ Senators, comes around

So this is a pointless exercise now.

If you can improve on the yes votes and add GOP legions, you have momentum. No conviction without it.

voting for impeachment on the grounds that trump bombed Iran illegally because they’re afraid it will be used to imply they are anti-Israel.

They don’t want to have to answer the question: “why wasn’t this list of dozens of previous bombings also impeachable?”

Let alone vote on the record.

Several previous impeachment resolutions were handled in the traditional way. They were dropped in the hopper and the representative would do a press conference on why the president should be removed… then it would automatically be referred to committee where it would die without any action on the record.

But this one required floor action… so the closest they could come to killing it was to table the motion. Like killing a bill in the senate by failing to vote for cloture (i.e., you never actually vote on the bill)

6. Glad they voted to table. It's a stupid stunt that has no chance of working, though trump deserves what he gets.

Don't think it helps us gain one vote at polls.

protect politics as usual.

“A public man has no right to let his actions be determined by particular interests. He does the same thing as a judge who accepts a bribe. Like a judge he must consider what is right, not what is advantageous to a party or class.”

table impeachment is just on the books? And this is just a procedural thing?

But there are a number of issues the felon can be impeached for. Just need a clarification.
