Why it matters: Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, is on course for an earthquake victory after running an extraordinary grassroots campaign focused on affordability in America's largest city.
Mamdani was leading 10 other Democrats including his top opponent, scandal-ridden Cuomo in the first round of the ranked-choice election as of late Tuesday night.
Mamdani's policy proposals include rent freezes, free buses, and city-run grocery stores, all funded by $10 billion in new taxes on corporations and the wealthy.
By the numbers: Mamdani received nearly 44% of votes with 90% of votes counted as of 10:30pm on Tuesday, per AP.
Cuomo received 36% of votes.

(1,193 posts)...if Adams had any chance of winning, he would have stayed a Democrat. I don't live in NYC anymore, but once you've proved yourself to be a bum, they're done with you.

(60,376 posts)If Cuomo runs on an independent line, the general election might be Adams (independent), Cuomo, Mamdani and Sliwah. Although more complicated with 2 independents, this reminds me of Joe Lieberman losing the primary to Lamont then running as an independent. The Republicans had a very weak candidate and Lieberman got much of the Republican vote along with some Democrats.
Here the Republican is a perennial loser. That means we may have the vote split mostly between the three of them. This would be a general election . Obviously Republicans are unlikely to vote for a Democratic socialist. I honestly could see anyone of the three winning ... especially given the baggage of both Adams and Cuomo.
