We live to declare others as inferior because we come from different regions, branding one culture as inferior. Then get on and complain when we lose support from some areas. Crazy thinking.

and I made some great friends, but in so many ways it was like living in a different time. I was able to adapt, but in retrospect, it really was a very different world.

Yes, I've encountered ignorance and bigotry in other areas of the country, but nothing came close to what I experienced in the south including the pride so many took in being ignorant. I don't like broad generalizations and I knew some more openminded and enlightened people, but invariably, most of them moved away.

Edit to add: I guess my main reaction was the mention of the confederate flag as some symbol of one's heritage. I knew too many people who felt that way and still tried to glorify some history that was reprehensible.

I live in Texas. It’s been years since I’ve seen a southern flag flown and then in a very rural setting. I used to see the flags in Georgia snd South Carolina. Kentucky as well. This was 15-25 years ago. But even in the south, they are viewed as offensive. And you would have to be a devoted racist to have one, because they aren’t sold. 20 years ago you’d see flags because they were still sold at Walmart. It was prior to today’s enlightenment.

I’ve also not heard the N word in 15 years either used by a white person down here. I speak to black colleagues down here about these things and it’s simply not a part of our lives. Our children are not exposed to it at all. The old view of the south is largely squarely in the past. The last racist rant I heard was 2 years ago in Philadelphia about Jews.

I don’t see it. My young adult children were raised in 4 of the most redneck states you can find. They have never been exposed to racism anymore than a kid in Connecticut The same that exists up north exists down here. I moved to a notable old KKK town in Georgia. Used to have big rally’s and was a sundowner town in the day. Everyone made comments to me about it…and…I moved in, my neighbor was black. His neighbor was black. Nobody cares. Kentucky I lived next door to a lesbian couple. Nobody cared. Not everyone in the country supports or believes in DEI….not even among democrats. The most racist conversations and exposure I’ve seen has been in Europe. Not here. But it’s also not in the South where I’ve lived.

You might not know the subtle racism but it’s there . New York was no prize but segregation was not the law. Black folks have learned to survive by seeing the signs unfortunately our Hispanic brothers and sisters did not and they are paying an ungodly price. When southerners vote for a racist , they are all right with his racism. Many white people on this board are not speaking to relatives because they voted for a racist felon.

OK, let's honor Virginian David Farragut of "damn the torpedoes" fame, the US Naval officer who took New Orleans and Mobile during the Civil War. When he was approached to lead the Confederate navy he said "I'll see you roast in hellfire first!"

Or how about the "Rock of Chickamagua" George Thomas? He was from Virginia, and was a great military leader. He turned defeat into victory at Stone's River, saved the Union army at Chickamagua, led the charge up Missionary Ridge outside of Chattanooga, was the "hammer" in Sherman's advance on Atlanta, and utterly destroyed Hood's army at Nashville.

Then we have all of the white men from northern Alabama and Georgia, from western North Carolina and Virginia, from eastern Tennessee and Kentucky, who supported and fought for the Union in overwhelming numbers.

Most importantly, we have the 150,000 sons of the South who fought so courageously for the Union, despite not even being recognized as citizens of the country they fought for - former slaves.

That is the "southern heritage" that should be honored.

where my mother's family had lived for many generations, predating the year (1863) when our region separated from the state of Virginia because it wanted to remain in the Union and not be part of the Confederacy.
