General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAt this point let Iran build their damn nuke.
Let them build a delivery system for it. Hell, let them have a half dozen, or a dozen. It really doesn't matter.
Nukes are, in many ways, the most useless weapons in the world. Countries that have nukes aren't going to be the first to drop them because they know if they drop them their nuke equipped opponent, and/or allies will retaliate with nukes in an act of mutually assured destruction. That's the reason why, over the decades since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, through the ensuing chaos and military posturing of those years, nobody has dropped the big one. He dies, she dies, we all die, and not even the craziest leaders in the world want that(looking at you here North Korea).
The only thing a nuke is good for in these times is security, the security blanket knowledge that a country can retaliate if push ever comes to shove.
So let Iran have their security blanket, it will actually a take bone of contention off the table, calm matters down, and real progress can be made on the diplomatic front instead of fighting about a weapons system that will never be used in an offensive capacity. Otherwise we're just going continue to see more ongoing madness, taking lives, destroying countries, all over the most useless weapon in the world.

I am sure their proxies hamas and hezbolah would love to get their hands on a nuclear armed rocket.
No thank-you.

(113 posts)With the same threats and accusation being thrown at them as are now thrown at Iran. Yet in the decades since they developed the bomb it has been used as a deterrent, and has allowed Pakistan and India to coexist in relative peace.

(113 posts)Hasn't happened, won't happen. Despite acting crazy, leaders of a country are quite sane when it comes to keeping their country and population intact.

(113 posts)Look at the real world, at realpolitik. Who is the only country to drop the bomb, the only one who had it at the time, us. If Japan had the bomb, I guarantee we wouldn't have dropped ours. Bombs are no longer practical as offensive weapons, at best they are a security blanket, a deterrent.

(5,694 posts)the most probably cause of a nuclear war is an accidental launch or the risk of retaliation to a false alarm (as has happened all too frequently in past). The more countries that have nukes, the greater the chance of that happening.
Another country with nukes is an absolutely bad idea.

Nor are any of their neighbors excited about Iranian nuclear threats and blackmail in their future.
And the last person to trust with nukes would be someone on a mission from God/Allah.
