Regarding the bombings in Iran,

it seems to me that the pilots, crew members, and others in the chain of command obeyed an order that they surely must have known was illegal. Should there be repercussions for them? Their actions are probably going to cost some Americans their lives!

Unfortunately, doubt a single strike will be ruled illegal, though it's immoral, imprudent, or worse. Silent Type Jun 23 #3

it's not the sort of mission that is, on its face, illegal.

a president is authorized to order such military strikes under certain conditions, and it's not the rank-and-file to determine if those steps have been met. for all they know, it's authorized under some war on terror or other use of force authorization.

you hold servicepeople responsible if the assignment is blatantly illegal, such as obvious crimes against humanity.
