5. The masks and lack of uniforms tell us something basic

Even the legitimate ones (that are actual ICE or police) know they are obeying illegal orders. They know that later if they are arrested that following orders is not a viable defense. I guarantee you that there are emails that talk to this. I would bet that there have been trainings that recommend wearing masks and not displaying their badges to protect from subsequent prosecution. They also know that what they’re doing is simply wrong and people are going to get really pissed off. Some might be tempted to track these people down. They know this because they’d get violent if this was done to them. Simple human logic.

We have laws, state and federal, that prohibit these behaviors.

These laws exist because of our sordid history of vigilante “justice” and extrajudicial rapes, murders, and assaults.

The Trump regime has ushered in a time of lawlessness where the supposed good guys are to be feared. Ultimately, these guys are going to pick on someone that’s armed and some of these idiots are going to get killed. When this happens the shooter is going to have a really good defense because they had no way of knowing who was attacking them. A masked person has always been viewed as an assailant—because in most instances they were.

It looks to me like a lot of these fuckers aren’t even real ICE or DHS. But it doesn’t really matter if they are. Without due process they are defacto illegitimate.

This piece brings the problems with how these supposed deportation actions are being carried out into even clearer focus.

Whether or not ICE is illegal, it is hated. Trump knows they could be treated like his base treats judges.
This proves that the country is not on board for this. If it was, the ICE agents would be respected heros, not fugitives from the general public.

On a practical level, you just can't have any government agent enforcing anything in disguise. How can you cooperate with an arrest when you don't know who the people are? It's unsafe and HAS to be illegal. Are there any lawsuits yet? There have to be lawsuits.

This entire program was spawned in the fevered mind of Stephen Miller, who is a bonafide psychopath, which can be said of a horrifying number of Republicans. Take Marsha Blackburn, for instance. Or Empty Greene. Or John Kennedy. or Mike Lee. Or "Moses" Johnson. Or, Hell, ANY Republican. Those with even a vestigial remnant of conscience have left the Republican Party, or are at least packing a go-bag, knowing that there is no line these fuckers won't cross, steadfast in their belief that the grotesquely corrupt "Sinister Six" on the SCOTUS will have their backs no matter what crimes they commit. If your criticism is that the original post is wasting your or our time, why fight this post instead of fighting the horrors? It seems people get a little too attached to their personal narratives about these issues and want to sweep others’ concerns away. Point being, if you would NOT want your actions publicized and known that you did the thing, you probably shouldn't do the thing (ethically, anyway). As the OP pointed out, "following orders" doesn't make it legally okay. For most people, ethics goes beyond just the law; probably in the case of people willing to be ICE agents and carry out these raids, the legal factor is the main thing. But there still might be a kernel of conscience left in some of them, that would make them unwilling if their participation were public.

The refusal to set standards is admission that you are not actually concerned about legality and you recognize that the people will not tolerate what you are doing. It may be an effort to make the deportations even more inflammatory to lead to the insurrection act sooner rather than later.
