Is this with the approval of the mayor?

(1,046 posts)But I don't think they're helping the raids themselves. I know they're protecting the Federal Buildings (including where anyone scooped up in the raids might be held) though - which would be pretty consistent. Government buildings will always be protected.

(637 posts)there will inevitably be property damage of some kind, whether its a random kid throwing something at a window or city trash cans being knocked over or whatever. Municipal cops have a civil mandate to protect the community -- its property and its people. It may appear that they are out there "helping ICE," and maybe some of them even are (this would be contrary to orders from command staff, I would bet). But their mere presence may simply be indicative of the city's desire to prevent the crowds from escalating.
I'm saying the cops are probably there doing COP things, not ICE things.
At least the majority of them.
And I'll admit that, except for a few clips, I haven't watching too much footage of the LA events in the last 24 hours.

Maybe the cops need to get ICE to stand down, then there wont be any huge crowds for them to prevent
from escalating (citizens are perfectly within their rights to protest, its a civil right ffs)

(637 posts)what can happen to a crowd of protesters when things get spun up, out of control, and the mob-mentality takes hold.
This is what I believe LAPD is trying to avoid. This is what I mean by "protecting the community." No, they have no legal obligation to save a life or protect. But they have a societal expectation, and likely a mandate from the mayor, to "keep the peace" and prevent injury and loss of life indirectly.

(7,871 posts)LA cops have DECADES DECADES of history of violence towards citizens. They have ZERO history of being the good guys in virtually any scenario.
Why not just admit theyre complicit? Have you watched ANY of the footage of these ICE raids? You can watch it live right now. They are not keeping the peace, theyre facilitating ICE violence
