Gavin Newsom Reacts to CNN Report That Trump Is Canceling Funding for the State:

Gavin Newsom Reacts to CNN Report That Trump Is Canceling Funding for the State: ‘Californians Pay the Bills for the Federal Government’

California Governor Gavin Newsom ripped President Trump on Friday after CNN reported his administration is preparing to cancel a “large swath” of federal funding for state universities.

“Californians pay the bills for the federal government. We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back,” Newsom posted on X. “Maybe it’s time to cut that off.”

Newsom’s post included a screenshot of the CNN article on Friday that reported the Trump Administration is looking to cancel federal funds that go towards the University of California and California State University systems. Those two systems, as well as California community colleges, are projected to receive $7.3 billion in federal funds for the 2025-26 school year.

who like to hate on not-perfect Newsom because he has better hair than them. We've had corporate Dems before, that's pretty much all we've ever had. HC was a corporate Dem, Obama was a corporate Dem, as was Clinton. Now one of our best chances is with Newsom they want to poo-poo also. We need to keep pressuring Newsom to do what we need, not throw him out. At the same time, what are our other viable presidential options? I see no solutions from the maga-lites, just whining and crying.

We in CA just send our Federal withholding to an escrow account managed by the State of California. Then since it is all about “who has the cards” Newsom plays hard ball. And TACO will give up and run and hide as he always does.

In fact, there are all these rumors that T is planning on seizing the state anyway. So, this is protective.

Is it illegal- yes- but let’s them take it to court and go all the way to the Supreme Court. Make them work for something for a change. I have had it- let’s hold our federal money and use it to bargain with the madman.

Normally the employer withholds part of the paycheck to be credited to the IRS, and also has to make a similar contribution. The State of California employs more than 220,000 people full time. Those employees make an average of around $143,000/year. My math puts that at nearly $7 billion the State of California has the operational capability to withhold from the federal government.

supervisor, nonunion, retired in 2017. His 2016 w2 for a full year is under $85,000. His peers are not making $143,000 now. Only the directors,/deputy directors of his particular agency would earn that much. The union positions than can earn overtime, the university professors, doctorates, etc. would be in that range but not a regular State employee, who keeps California, our great state, humming along.

Newsom hosted Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon on his podcast, but the criticism isn’t limited to his platforming of these deplorable beings and their viewpoints.

I don’t see it mentioned in the article, but Newsom,
also criticized concern over Trump’s disappearing people, characterizing it as a “distraction.”

I support him reaching out to dialogue with right wing luminaries(?). Democrats are doing better with city-dwellers than the rural voters. Some effort needs to be made to understand the views of the "Septic Tank Vote". At some point, sooner or later, someone has to find a way to begin mending this rift and draw more people together toward more unity. We can't go on this way much longer. Patience and forbearance will be needed on both sides.

I'm so sick of this guy. We should put anti-Trump billboards everywhere. He's the worst pRes we ever had or ever will have. He's a mean, vile creature.
Let's rake the forests and send the pine needles to MAL and dump them on his lawn.
Let's call out the State guard to protect OUR forests from his loggers. Also, to protect our dams and reservoirs.
Let's send our tax money to DC by way of bitcoin--or pennies. It is my understanding that bitcoin and such currency is basically worthless--the appearance of money without true value.
If he wants to start a civil war, let him try to take over California. FAFO.

the latest recipient of the "antisemetic" ploy that Trump uses to harrass Universities when he wants their money?
I am wondering why private universities in Cali are not mentioned, only the two public systems. He must think it's easier than challenging the powerful private science institutions we have here. Which Cali universities have told this bastard to take a hike?

Get ready for a massive lawsuit. Discrimination against the state, or something. The Secret Service will really be taxed, because I doubt we will provide escorts for this pr*ck. He's not wanted here. He should be lucky to find an airport to land at.

I wonder how he'd like it if anti-Israel billboards popped up? He's supporting Netanyahu and going to build a Trump Hotel on a fine, Gaza beach, once the population has been exterminated.

"Ford to City: Drop Dead" refers to a famous headline from the New York Daily News that appeared on October 30, 1975, after President Gerald Ford denied federal assistance to New York City during its financial crisis. This phrase symbolized the city's struggle and contributed to Ford's loss in the 1976 presidential election.
