I KNEW IT !! Trump admin ***IS NOT COLLECTING 100% TARIFFS !!*** this trade war is outward facing stupidity !!
I kept asking people I know who order from vendors in China were are the price increases and people are saying they aren't applied.
There's **NO DOUBT** something sideways going with Trumps tariff crap from China, I'm thinking they wan to keep front loading with this constant "pause" crap cause Americans stopped spending.

Thanks to a technical glitch, Donald Trumps tariffs havent even been collected at U.S. ports.
On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that an entry code in the U.S. system for American ships to use to have their freight exempted from tariffs isnt working, and the issue is being reviewed. As a result, no tariffs are being collected by the U.S. government for the time being.

(6,962 posts)And the stores don't want to disappoint shoppers, right?
Paying more gives shoppers a warm buzz because it shows TTT (Trump's Terrific Tariffs) are working, and soon Americans will all be rich beyond their wildest dreams! Right? /sarcasm
Same with COVID era price gouging, same with egg prices.
Seriously though - it is more likely any applicable tariff will be collected at point of sale, rather than port of entry.
You will buy a cheap Chinese made gadget, state and federal sales tax on top of that, then the TTT is applied.
Your cheap Chinese gadget is no longer cheap.

(18,380 posts)Those of us who ordered anything from overseas in late March have those items in flux. Something I ordered from Germany just cleared customs, but the transaction occurred prior to the implementation of tariffs. I've been watching to see if this thing will have a 10% tariff or not (so far I cannot tell).
Just something to keep in mind. China (and certain parts of Asia in general) can have very slow ship times.

(5,867 posts)I would think it could get complicated. And how is it collected? Do the owners of the freight ships write a check? Do they freight companies collect it from the groups paying them to ship goods?
And where does the money go? Just into the treasurey?
It seems like we should get a monthly report on how much we've collected?

Seriously, though, you have nailed it.

(6,617 posts)What about containers that aren't unpacked at the port? Does the new tariff apply to those goods even though the whole container was in the U.S. and had been transported away from the port before the tariff was applied?
And...with the huge dollar amounts involved that will incentivize the hell out of cheating, do we have enough inspectors to keep up?
