Any member of Congress who purchased stocks in the last 48 hours should probably disclose that now. Ive been hearing some interesting chatter on the floor. Its time to ban insider trading in Congress. AOC

Before I get started on the above subject, I have to stop laughing. I just saw Lauren Boebert, in a House hearing on JFK, ask Oliver Stone a pointed question about a book he authored that claimed LBJ set up the murder of the president. It was, of course, Roger Stone's book. There are fucking idiots in office, and she takes the cake.
There are also dishonest people in both houses of Congress. It goes without saying that the current administration is corrupt. I have spoken with a number of people in the last 72 hours who recognize that the recent tariff-related episode was economic warfare against the American people among other targets.
AOC and Elizabeth Warren are calling for investigations. Hopefully that will happen. Other people have said the convicted sex offender/felon should be investigated. Yet due to a recent USSC decision, it is legal for presidents to break the law. It reminds me of an interview that I did with Onondaga Chief Paul Waterman decades ago. He said, Democracy means being honest and telling the truth. Most white politicians are liars. They tell lies, then pass laws to enforce their lies.
In the past, AOC introduced a bill to outlaw insider trading by elected officials and their families. Obviously such laws are needed. But AOC didn't get the needed support to pass a law to keep elected officials and their families from legal theft.
We need to clean house. If Democrats would come out strongly for this, we will win elections.

(283,038 posts)We all need a clean up woman
It just seems all too obvious to me.
Note: When Ali was preparing to defend his title against tough Canadian George Chuvalo, the Champ called George "the washer woman." I have a picture of Ali holding a mop head over George's head at a press conference. Although this has little to do with the topic at hand, your comment reminded me of this. And as people who loved Ali, we need to remember not only how hilarious he was, or how great a boxer he was ..... but how he bravely stood up to Uncle Sam, and ended up winning an 8 to 0 decision in the Supreme Court.

(42,010 posts)... I'd expect the majority of Republicans to be jumping to invest before thinking.
If one doesn't grasp that Oliver Stone and Roger Stone are distinct individuals, that alone should disqualify them from holding office. Any office. More, one can be certain they will lie and steal.

(113,509 posts)They don't feel the need for it anymore.
They take pride in being able to get away with it.

(11,760 posts)pulling off Grift or major corruption puts you on Trump's short list.........
Even if it is criminal for them to trade on insider information, who in Trump's Dept of Justice is going to prosecute them???????
At the rate the Republicans are going, by the end of the first year, there will be no regulatory agency still in business, or not having been seriously neutered.......FAA, FCC, SEC, DOJ, FBI, NLRB, and countless others.
With regulatory agencies, you can't begin to establish another GILDED AGE, complete with modern day ROBBER BARRONS !!!!!!!!!!
They have always wanted to obliterate ANY sign of FDR, and now they have their chance, along with all the National Parks that Teddy Roosevelt founded during his years in office......
All the Republican Politicians are reading Steinbeck's GRAPES OF WRATH, and getting tiny Woodies.........and Putin, doesn't even need Viagra anymore, he has had a Woodie 24/7 since the inauguration........

(76,631 posts)saying that I really respect the way you said this. I was nodding in full agreement as I read each word.
Earlier today, when a friend visited, we were talking about if our parents and grandparents saw this, they would be furious. And so your mentioning the Gilded Age, robber barons, FDR, and Steinbeck reminds me of so many conversations I had with them ...... those are what they often spoke of.
Per Putin's woodie, no mushroom, he. It is under his watch that the US has become the most hated and feared country on earth. And that the US voted to self-destruct.

(64,895 posts)I hope that if we're talking about "cleaning house" it's both sides of the aisle regarding this topic.
I'm not advocating against democrats, generally. I'm advocating against those that vote against any bill outlawing insider trading and/or any that participate.

(76,631 posts)And a really good question, at that. I was just talking to my cousin about this very thing. And he asked the same basic question. Now, obviously I can only speculate. But I think there are a number of young Democrats -- I'm thinking of one in the state senate here -- that recognize that insider trading and corporate campaign donations are serious problems in politics. I'm confident there are others in various states.
I'm fortunate that the district I live in has one of the newer, younger Democrats in Congress. He, too, understands that money in politics is a negative feature in today's world. I know that it's not just younger women and men in office that are opposed to ending the insider trading. And more looking to fund their campaigns without owing a corporation their vote. If citizens can show that they strongly support this type of candidates -- contributions to individual candidates, and volunteering for their campaigns -- we can win elections. And bring about much needed change.
