I know he participated in one of the Austrian camps' liberation. He told me his commander ordered him to take his men and go to the nearby town and make every able-bodied citizen go to the camp to help the victims and bury the dead, by gunpoint if necessary.

When we visited Poland with him about 20 years ago, he wanted to see Aushtwitz. He was disappointed because he said one of the things that was missing that made it so horrible was the unending overpowering smell and that there was no way the local residents could not know what was going on.
