(5,106 posts)For me, I think if you're republican you're not a good person.

(54,991 posts)I know plenty of republicans who are very generous and kind within their circle.
Pillars of the community.
Great neighbors, happy to dog sit, lend tools, mow your lawn and take in your mail when you're on vacation, etc.
First person you'd call in a pinch.
Generous to charities with time and money.
Give upstanding citizens.
And total jerks to anyone they perceive as a "threat" to their narrow little world. Which is where the bigotry comes in. Lots of excuses to not extend that kindness and generosity to "others".
So you can get these people who have amazing reputations within their local church, say, but if you're not in the church, they're *ssholes.

(897 posts)Reagan and the newt. Before that, it wasn't unusual for repubs and dems often worked together for the good of the citizens of this country. By the end of the 1990's, any repub who didn't toe the line was voted out and labeled a rino. Now... we know what current repubs are.
(editing due to lots of fumble fingers today!)

(8,378 posts)there's a time factor here. I assume you wouldn't call Abraham a bad person. and in fact up to the fifties and sixties, they had a lot of good people - more than we had, because we were stuck with all the Dixiecrats, who were the foundation of today's Republican party. I am old enough to remember a few of them, Margaret Chase Smith. Mark Hatfield. Dwight Eisenhower. And more.
But after the Brown v. Board decision, and the Civil Rights Act, they turned Republican and poisoned the party.

(5,106 posts)From an historical perspective, and today's reference, Lincoln might be considered a Democrat. What I am referring to is the mindset of a republican whether they be pre sixties dixiecrats or a post sixties republican. It's the mindset.

(8,378 posts)Truly, they didn't. Certainly not all of them., Some did, but got quashed by their own party. It really was a different time.

(5,106 posts)I don't care which side you're on, or what the party named itself, or how the party inter-struggled for decency, my focus is that the racism and the "other-ism" makes one a nasty person. At no time in American history did we NOT have that ugly mindset and good people had to fight against it. Different time, yes. Same tune some (today it seems like half of our population)are still singing, yes.

(20,218 posts)I was just going to comment on that, because I'm pretty sure it's not true.
EDIT: The best known case of a promiment Republican changing their stance about LGBT+ rights after their daughter came out is Dick Cheney.

(2,594 posts)It does happen to them.
Remember a couple of decades ago when some disturbed person opened fire on the annual congressional softball game? One of the Republican players was wounded br a gunshot.
Despite this, he still voted down every gun control measure...

(6,208 posts)I've been saying this for years. When it happens to THEM it's a totally different story. If THEIR daughter gets raped and becomes pregnant as a result, then by all means she should be able to get an abortion.

(11,760 posts)and just get's knocked up, if her family is wealthy, the family just immediately sends her for a "semester abroad" in one of the Scandinavian countries.......or the old guard, family Dr. a republican OB-GYN performs a "D & C" procedure in his office, which they purport is not the same as an abortion......LOL
That is how it was handled by the wealthy before abortions became illegal........
Of course if you weren't from a wealthy family, it was back alley, coat hanger, bleed to death, or get an infection, and/or so scarred that you weren't ever able to have another pregnancy, and therefore no children.......
Or go to a "home" for un-wed mothers, etc and be shamed by all your schoolmates and their parents....
