Judge orders US government to return man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador by end of Monday

A federal judge on Friday ruled that the United States must bring back a man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador last month.
Judge Paula Xinis of the US District Court in Maryland directed the federal government to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, to the US no later than 11:59 p.m. on April 7.

(1,654 posts)to take that next step. I’d like to think the first judge who does it will be followed by a wave but who knows if the appellate court would reverse it, saying the judge went too far.

(36,528 posts)Now we'll see if El Salvador cooperates. (The order was to the US Government - it is up to the US Government to make it happen - since the court has no jurisdiction in El Salvador.)

I wonder if we and how much are paying them.

Unless there is something in the contract (assuming there is one) that obligates them to return anyone we ask to have sent back, they are not under any legal obligation to do so. So there is no way to predict what they will do.
