General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just voted. My observation:
We tried to vote Tuesday and went to two different early voting places that were jammed. Parking was even a problem not just what looked like a long wait. In my old age I'm developing hip and back issues and walking from a distant parking spot or standing in a queue for a long time is not something I want to do.
So today we chose a location that was not as close. It's a rec center away from the most frequented parts of our local area. We got there right at opening time and were able to walk in with no waiting. The election workers were all very friendly. I asked the lady who helped me if they had been busy the last couple of days and she said they had been slammed. I'm going to guess that the heavy voting here is a good sign. This is a very blue county and dems will do well here. It would be nice if in the red parts of the state dems there would get off their duffs and overwhelm the righties.
Now that that's done, I can worry about other things like what we're going to have for dinner tonight.

Full house Meet n Greet for our Senate and House candidates yesterday. By show of hands looked like 80-90% had already voted..
Yeah!

(2,851 posts)He was my least favorite PMG and I served under six of them starting with Marvin Runyon.
My favorite PMG was Megan Brennan- she started as a letter carrier in the 1980s and thirty years later was appointed as the first female Postmaster General. I prefer PMGs that are homegrown and have actual hands-on experience with USPS operations.
I am just going to vote on Election Day- the school is only about a mile or so from my home and I can multitask by getting in a walk before and after voting. Ive never had to wait for a long time and the poll workers there are always kind and helpful.

(35 posts)The Clerk of Courts is advising people to not use big blue mailboxes and use drop off locations only. Too much room for error with the whackos out there.

(7,835 posts)Been here 40 years and a neighbor of mine was an election clerk for many of those.
I miss walking in and hearing, "Hi Nittersing!" and her flipping right to the page with my name for me to sign.
This week I took my (4 page!!) ballot to the drop box. Received. Counted.

(2,415 posts)by which time Oregon instituted mail-in voting. I don't miss voting in person at all.
ALL states should have nothing but mail-in voting. It is great.

(10,028 posts)We're lucky they even allow us to vote here, but we did Monday morning with no lines, although I have heard turnout is up, but our population is up, too. I have noticed fewer Trump flags around than in 2020.

(5,314 posts)The reason was that the 2nd time I took my rollator and sat on it, standing being something I can't do for 10 min much less 45. A pollwatcher came up to me and said my husband and I could go to the front of the line. She turned me over to an election worker who processed us right through.
On the way out, a woman in car with a handicapped placard called to me and asked about the line inside. She was obviously waiting for the line to get short enough to be within her capabilities. I told her what I just learned.
In previous years there have been signs with instructions for the handicapped, but in Ken Paxton's Texas it's bootstrap time. I was looking up Election Central's number when the pollwatcher approached me, so I can't say if that would have helped.

(4,258 posts)full. Will try early tomorrow. No Trump signs, but another Harris/Walz on my block!

(35,221 posts)I did see one bumper sticker.
There are now several Harris/Walz signs. The local ones have Harris/Walz on one side and Allred on the other!
I voted yesterday afternoon at about 3 pm and it was steady but didn't have to wait in line. Many more people than I saw at primary voting however.

(141 posts)Is the sweet spot. I never go the first day and yesterday I was on Grammie duty. It took about 25 minutes of line standing in a suburb to the north of Houston today.

(15,757 posts)So today we got there at opening time and just sailed through. A friend of ours went to another location and got there five minutes after opening and also sailed through.
Anecdotal stories. But that worked for us.

(3,941 posts)Of course, they can vote anywhere in the county. But to those who are trying to avoid the crowds, I tell them about the church on MLK that never has a line. Today I went to the grocery store and saw a lady that came into the office the other day--she was one I told about the polling place on MLK. Now, it's important to note the reason I told her about it is the county chair was worried the elections office would close the location if more voters didn't use it and I myself voted there on Monday and did not have to wait in line at all. When I saw that lady at the store today, she told me the secret is out...there were long, long lines at that polling site. She was going back this afternoon to cast her ballot. According to voters that have come in the office this weeks, there are long lines everywhere in this DEEPLY red county. I pray that means Colin will kick Cruz's ASS!

(3,899 posts)My hometown.
The voter registration levels in Austin are off the charts. 96.5 percent of eligible voters are actually registered there. Hope they all get out and vote!

(3,899 posts)As does San Marcos, and I'm sure many other cities.
San Marcos is unique in that their MLK Street intersects with LBJ Street. (LBJ went to college there and signed the Higher Education Act there as President.) There is now a Crossroads Memorial located at that intersection.

(3,899 posts)We have had the ability during early voting to vote at any early voting location for awhile now. A few years ago Hays County joined a number of other Texas counties adopting Vote Centers, which allow our county's voters to vote at any location in the county on Election Day too.
Some counties probably don't have the population to go that route. But it makes it possible for those who have moved within the county to still vote and not have to go back to the precinct in which they originally registered.
Liberal In Texas
(15,757 posts)And this county, Dallas, is actually a part of Texas that's progressive. Blue. The election department isn't perfect, but it's pretty well run.
I wish the rest of the state was as well run as the big cities.

(35 posts)We were told that early voting was up 80% over that last presidential election. They are expecting record voter turnout. Unfortunately they are also preparing us for possible disruptions. Law enforcement will be on alert and we were told not to be alarmed by their presence. Its going to be a long but important day!

(35,221 posts)Here in Brazoria Cty we have roughly 240,000 registered voters (that includes suspended - I'm using that bigger number to err on the side of caution). So far about 61,000 have mailed or shown up in person to vote, and this does include earlier mail in votes as well. My county updates daily.

(4,258 posts)for Ted Cruz, but by my Harris/Walz signs it was probably no. I said emphatically "Fuck No!" No way. Only door knocker this year.
