Because there is no one to hold them accountable.
There was a time when lying was not accepted and the media would destroy anyone that tried those shenanigans.
But, Trump and his running mate have decided that name-calling, character assassination, and a flood of lies are the only way for them to win the White House. They have nothing else.
With only 31 days left until the election, we can anticipate that the lying will only get worse.

Flood, flood, FLOOD that RW media appartus with lies at a level we've never seen. Too many to have Democrats respond to and refute.
Ampplified by Russian bot farms I'm sure too.

(53,280 posts)Other than rebutting it at every opportunity, we must concentrate on getting out the Democratic vote and preventing this right wing evil from turning our country into Russia.

(7,827 posts)For example, regarding the accusations regarding FEMA diverting money to undocumented immigrants or sending it abroad. Its of course total bunk but apparently credible enough for some people to question it. FEMA had to issue a press release to debunk all the lies.
And we should never lose sight of that!

(46,123 posts)This is a Russian strategy. It could be a good sign, if they are only trying to prevent further Democratic gains. Or it could be prep for a lying attack on Kamala.
I'm reading a fascinating book called "Stories are Weapons" that details how Bannon and Trump accomplished an authoritarian surge on Facebook in 2016. This type of confusion was part of the strategy. It also delves into this as psyops, and probes a famous book on the Authoritarian Mindset.

Stories Are Weapons: Psychological Warfare and the American Mind
One of Publishers Weekly's Top 10 Politics/Current Events books of Spring 2024
A sharp and timely exploration of the dark art of manipulation through weaponized storytelling, from the best-selling author of Four Lost Cities.
In Stories Are Weapons, best-selling author Annalee Newitz traces the way disinformation, propaganda, and violent threats―the essential tool kit for psychological warfare―have evolved from military weapons deployed against foreign adversaries into tools in domestic culture wars. Newitz delves into Americas deep-rooted history with psychological operations, beginning with Benjamin Franklins Revolutionary Warera fake newspaper and nineteenth-century wars on Indigenous nations, and reaching its apotheosis with the Cold War and twenty-first-century influence campaigns online. Americas secret weapon has long been coercive storytelling. And theres a reason for that: operatives who shaped modern psychological warfare drew on their experiences as science fiction writers and in the advertising industry.
Now, through a weapons-transfer program long unacknowledged, psyops have found their way into the hands of culture warriors, transforming democratic debates into toxic wars over American identity. Newitz zeroes in on conflicts over race and intelligence, school board fights over LGBT students, and campaigns against feminist viewpoints, revealing how, in each case, specific groups of Americans are singled out and treated as enemies of the state. Crucially, Newitz delivers a powerful counternarrative, speaking with the researchers and activists who are outlining a pathway to achieving psychological disarmament and cultural peace.
Incisive and essential, Stories are Weapons reveals how our minds have been turned into blood-soaked battlegrounds―and how we can put down our weapons to build something better.

Quoting Isaac Asimov
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.

(35,229 posts)Just as an example, the easily fact-checked allegation that Trump said, "Make them riot!" "Do it." There were at least two threads on it. People pointed to the exact page and paragraph of the filing where the quote was attributed to "P5," not Trump. One changed their post, the other refused. Many defended it saying that they heard it from some news media personality (they did; that person was wrong - and the defenders refused to back down preferring the inaccurate story to the information from the source, or simply insisting "It sounds like something he would say."
This is a recent incident, but far from the only one. My most vivid early memory was during Trump's presidency when pictures of foil-covered children were attributed to Trump - even though the images were taken during Obama's presidency.
We are not immune to confirmation bias. Our leaders aren't deliberately trying to exploit it, even if they occasionally misspeak. But it is nearly as dangerous when it spreads like wildfire and those spreading it refuse to self-correct when fact-checked.

(35,229 posts)And when things are posted here that are blatantly false, even when the excerpts posted clearly contradict the headline, a substantial minority respond to it as if it were the gospel truth. Some even justify spreading false information by making a comment like "if it is posted here, it is generally true, so I didn't check.". One person recently even bragged about posting misleading information because DU needed more content.
It's the attitude that disturbs me far more than the quantity.

(35,229 posts)Based on a headline that misinterprets the facts. Often, but but always, the headline is disproven in the article itself. At other times, all it takes is a quick Google search.
They all fall into the category of confirmation bias -it's so deliciously awful that we want it to be true, so we share it as if it is without bothering to do any basic fact-checking. (And when challenged, it is rare for a poster to make any effort to correct the harm done by spreading disinformation.)

(10,653 posts)They know they can say whatever they want because they have the media in their back pocket.
To boot, their lies embolden what little base they have left.
Besides, they don't even care about "winning", as they think they are going to win by revolt.
Either on election day or Jan 6th, or every day in-between.
Keep on lying boys, cause someone's got your number. Bring it on.

(2,300 posts)Let's say 15 years ago. Everyone knew that politicians lied, but the problem was that there was no audience for it, they were exposed as liars, and so didn't do it much. And then trump founded a cult, a collection of the most gullible and easily-duped racist and violent people. The liars have now found that millions of people in that cult will stupidly believe anything they say, absolutely anything, and it has emboldened them to make it their SOP. Moron trump supporters are the reason this has happened to this extent. They aren't going to get smarter, even if trump dies (which is starting to seem unlikely), so this is the country we have now. Bunch of imbeciles.
