Divorce
Contaminated air and water

(29,577 posts)in abortion law. It does not indicate a higher frequency of the crime.
soldierant
(7,695 posts)and that doesn't need to mean a higher frequency of the drime, only a higher frequency of births resulting from it. Roe was only fifty years ago. Products of pre-Roe incest are mostly still walking around.
whathehell
(29,577 posts)but again, that has nothing to do with with there being a higher incidence of it in particular areas, and that's all I'm addressing here.

(58,833 posts)It's not a "stereotype." It's a very sad fact for many.
whathehell
(29,577 posts)and though most stereotypes have at least some truth to them, I'd need to see stats before accepting that negative a claim about any group.
Collimator
(1,764 posts)The stereotype leans on the idea that people in isolated communities don't have as many options for potential mates so people are more comfortable with the notion of hooking up with blood relatives.
The sort of incest that this report refers to is more likely about that specific form of sexual abuse. And while we know that abuse of all kinds can happen in any community regardless of income, it's not surprising to see more of it in communities undergoing prolonged economic stress.
I don't like lazy or mean-spirited stereotypes, either. Take the image of toothless yokels, for example. It's not a kind conceptualization, by any means. But when people are enculturated to revere their own ignorance and to disdain "educated elites", then why wouldn't the scientific basis of good dental care be ignored? Vaccines are eschewed, after all.
To quote another poster's excerpt from the article, ". . .poverty, of course, brings along with it the long list of social ills." Higher incidences of incest would count among those social ills. For one thing, fewer tax-funded protective services keep victims trapped more effectively. An once an older child or sibling "ages out" or whatever, a family predator can look to a younger victim because nothing is being done to stop them.

It's one thing to be retired and not worry about paying into the local area's education system. It's another to have the products of that grossly underfunded education system steal your stuff and threaten your life out of nothing but desperation.

Does it seem like the WSJ, Washington Post, and NYTimes all talk about Donald a lot? It's not just "ratings" - these companies are owned by very wealthy people. They don't give a crap about evangelicalism, they care about their taxes. That is the only reason Donald wins. He gave his uber-wealthy friends the tax breaks they wanted last time, and he'll do it again.

(1,786 posts)White people in wealthy areas in the South and Black in poor areas in the South it might as well be two different countries. It is misleading to average the two together and then compare state maternal mortality rates to the rates in other countries where almost everyone has access to the same level of care.

(50,391 posts)That poverty, of course, brings along with it the long list of social ills above, but Republicans are more than willing to tolerate massive, desperate levels of human suffering to make sure theres a steady supply of cheap labor. In fact, they intentionally run their states that way to produce those results.
If you have any doubts about this, if that sounds like hyperbole, simply look at the policies the GOP has promoted for the past century:
Hartmann then lists these points and explains each one according to the above thesis.
Republicans hate unions,
Republicans hate Social Security
Republicans hate universal or inexpensive healthcare
Republicans hate the minimum wage because it cuts into profits.
Republicans hate empowered women
Republicans promote hatred of racial, religious, and gender minorities
Republicans hate education
Republicans hate atheism and embrace a neofascist form of Protestant Christianity and a bizarre, rightwing version of Catholicism
Republicans hate food stamps, housing supports, aid to women and dependent children,
Republicans hate environmental protections
Republicans hate unemployment insurance
