by Julia Mueller - 10/04/24 9:00 PM ET
Former President Trump on Friday vowed to revert North Carolinas Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg if hes elected this fall, a little over a year after the military installation was redesignated to remove the name of a Confederate general.
The first question that I asked: Should we change the name from Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg? Trump said, prompting raucous applause from the crowd gathered for his town hall in Fayetteville, near the base. So heres what we do, we get elected. Im doing it.
The Army base, the largest in the country, was originally named after Gen. Braxton Bragg, a slave owner and Confederate general. During his administration, Trump mocked efforts to rename the base as part of a push to ditch the names of Confederate soldiers. It was officially dubbed Fort Liberty last year.
Im going to promise to you, as I said at the beginning, that were going to change the name back to Fort Bragg, Trump underscored toward the end of the roughly hour-long event.

(11,347 posts)Hyping the Confederacy is just another 'good people on both sides' moment and something to stir the outrage.
Because it's all Agent Orange has.
No policy or ideas to improve the lives of American citizens.
Just 'save my own ass' maneuvers and hate-mongering, 24/7.

(185,648 posts)Bragg is generally considered among the worst generals of the Civil War. Most of the battles he engaged in ended in defeat. Bragg was extremely unpopular with both the officers and ordinary men under his command, who criticized him for numerous perceived faults, including poor battlefield strategy, a quick temper, and overzealous discipline. Bragg has a generally poor reputation with historians, though some point towards the failures of Bragg's subordinates, especially Major General and former Bishop Leonidas Polka close ally of Davis and known enemy of Braggas more significant factors in the many Confederate defeats under Bragg's command. The losses suffered by Bragg's forces are cited as highly consequential to the ultimate defeat of the Confederate States of America.

Bragg was a piece of work. Generally an asshole who poured bodies into the grinder and was court-martialed for disobeying orders.
This on one assassination is almost comical.
It is alleged that some of Bragg's troops attempted to assassinate him on two occasions in August and September 1847, but he was not injured either time. In the more serious of the two incidents, one of his soldiers detonated a 12-pound artillery shell underneath his cot. Although the cot was destroyed, Bragg himself somehow emerged without a scratch.

(185,648 posts)Bragg had a reputation for being a disciplinarian who strictly adhered to regulations. There is a famous, apocryphal story, included in Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs, about Bragg as a company commander at a frontier post where he also served as quartermaster. He submitted a requisition for supplies for his company, then, as quartermaster, declined to fill it. As company commander, he resubmitted the requisition, giving additional reasons for his requirements, but as the quartermaster, he denied the request again. Realizing that he was at a personal impasse, he referred the matter to the post commandant, who exclaimed, "My God, Mr. Bragg, you have quarreled with every officer in the army, and now you are quarreling with yourself!" While Grant did circulate the story, he admitted that he knew nothing of its truthfulness and no one else came forward to attest to its veracity.[7]

I'm waiting for him to announce the reinstatement of slavery and their "raucous applause" because you know they would.

(4,378 posts)Not just the South anymore.
The streak of genocidal, slave-owning, fashie-fan darkness that permeates US history is alive and well. All it needs is a symbolic leader to bring it to fruit, like mushrooms growing on decay. The oligarchy loves having cannon fodder. Use 'em and throw 'em away, there's more where they came from.
The streak of justice and light is opposed by the dark impulses, which are well-funded by the rich and powerful. It takes a lot to overcome the oppression.
Think of it as "rockets red glare" vs "purple mountains majesty". Them rockets is powerful. The mountains persist.
