T-Mobile agrees to $31.5 million settlement over data breaches

The Federal Communications Commission has settled with T-Mobile US Inc. (Nasdaq: TMUS) over multiple, massive user data breaches to the tune of $31.5 million, the agency announced earlier this week.

The agreement will address a string of breaches affecting the telecommunications company in 2021, 2022 and 2023 that allowed bad actors to access data for tens of millions of customers, including Social Security numbers, addresses, birthdays and driver's license numbers.

The Bellevue-based company agreed to pay half of the settlement — $15.75 million— to the U.S. Treasury, with the rest to be spent on enhancing its cybersecurity.

"We will continue to send a strong message to providers entrusted with this delicate information that they need to beef up their systems or there will be consequences," FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said in a news release.
