Even during the Bush years, I don't remember anyone on the left questioning the veracity of the numbers. What I do remember is members of Bush's economic team pushing to change how things were defined in order to make thing look better. I remember one guy saying fast food restaurants should be classified in manufacturing since they were manufacturing hamburgers. Yes, someone on Bush's team actually made that argument. Thankfully, none of the redefinitions that they pushed for were ever adopted.
